Most players making a LB team are new to the game or have played 1 spring or fall season (ex. Player played a spring season in 3/4LB as a 4th grader. The following year as a 5th grader, the player may be placed on a 5/6LB team in order to acquire more knowledge of the game as rules advance).
Players are:
Learning to catch and throw
Learning scooping and cradling
Dodging techniques are being learned
Has an initial understanding of the rules of the game
Learning how and when to apply various position defense techniques
Developing an understanding of how to move within an offensive technique.
Do only new players make the LB team?
No, returning players may be placed on a LB Team. This is especially true for players who may have only played one spring season and do not play off season lacrosse. LB team placement for a returning player should not be looked at negatively. These players may not have strong enough stick skills, or understanding of the play of game, or understanding the rules of the game to advance to a B team this season. The LB team may be the best fit as these returning players tend to be the strongest players on their LB teams and enjoy the experience where their skills and confidence can grow.
